SCULLCAP

(Scutellaria laterifolia)

PARTS USED: Flowers, leaves, and stems.

ACTIONS: Sedative, nervine tonic, antispasmodic

MEDICINAL PROPERTIES: Entire plant helps combat insomnia, anxiety, and tension headaches. Is used to alleviate alcohol and drug withdrawal. Menstrual irregularities and cramps are alleviated when used both by itself and with other nervines. May also reduce epileptic seizures.

COMBINATIONS: passionflower, kava, other anxiolytics

GROWTH PATTERN: Scullcap is a perennial which grows well well-drained, but moist soils. It may reach 3 feet tall and prefers full to partial shade. Despite being a perennial, it needs to be planted every 3-4 years.

SPIRITUAL: When used in incantations, Skullcap is believed to produce relaxation, serenity, and joy.

COUNTERINDICATIONS: None noted

DOSAGE: For mild relief of stress and anxiety, drink 3 cups of infusion a day. For headache and nervous tension, drink 1-2 tsp 3 times a day.
